I genuinely feel it's important to understand that, hiring freelancers isn’t just about “saving costs”. In fact, a low rate might seem like a win, but if you’re drowning in revisions or rewriting the work yourself, did you really save anything? Here’s what I suggest you do: Pay for skill, not just words – A good copywriter isn’t just typing, they’re persuading, positioning, and converting. Set a benchmark – Define quality early so you don’t keep shifting the goalpost. Test for problem-solving – A freelancer who understands your audience is worth more than one who just follows instructions. I think at the end of the day, balance means understanding that “cheap” and “cost-effective” aren’t the same thing. Enough said.

Test Before You Invest A polished portfolio is great, but real-world results matter more. Start with a paid test project—something small but meaningful. This reveals their ability to nail tone, clarity, and conversion potential. If they deliver, the rate conversation shifts from cost to ROI.

    - Check their past work to see if they match your style and needs. - Ask for a small paid test to judge quality before a big project. - Be clear about expectations—tone, length, and deadlines. - Offer fair pay but explain your budget if needed. - Find a balance between skill and cost—cheaper isn’t always better.

I have the advantage of owning an established company which has contracted freelancers from the word go. With a long established background in print and television as an editor, writer and senior TV producer, I am familiar with the capabilities of the seasoned writers from diverse disciplines who I call on. By matching writers known to me to each commission, I am confident I will receive quality copy, which I edit and proofread before delivering to clients. I always try and meet my writers’ quotes which take into consideration the fact that my company generates work for them.

It depends on what kind of texts are involved. For larger projects, I am a advocate of performance-based pay. Better texts and optimizations should benefit copywriters. I first focus on verifiable successes. Are there exceptional reviews from former customers? Does the copywriter know my audience and industry? Texts for a 5-star luxury resort in the Maldives look different from those for a summer dress in a Shopify store. For quality assurance, clear objectives are essential. Depending on the product the objective could be a higher conversion rate than before. I am always interested in numbers. There’s hardly any arguing about them. Prices should be fair and reward good performance. That’s why I emphasize performance-based compensation.

The best way, I believe, is to give them trial tasks. Allow them to demonstrate their skills and expertise with paid trial work. Then you can check it from there.

To ensure quality while negotiating rates with freelance writers, begin by reviewing their portfolios to assess their writing style and subject matter expertise. Conduct a brief writing test on a relevant topic to gauge their ability to meet your specific needs. Check references and client testimonials to get insights into their reliability and professionalism. When discussing rates, be transparent about your budget but remain open to negotiation. Consider offering project-based payment or incentives for exceptional work to encourage high standards. Build a relationship by providing constructive feedback, which can motivate writers to elevate their craft. Ensuring quality and fair rates will lead to successful collaborations.

To ensure quality while negotiating rates with freelance writers, start by **reviewing their portfolio** for consistency, tone, and alignment with your brand voice. Conduct **a paid test project** to assess their ability to meet deadlines and follow guidelines. Prioritize writers with **industry experience** and strong research skills. When negotiating rates, balance cost with value—**opt for quality over the cheapest option** while ensuring fair compensation. Offer **long-term collaboration or bulk projects** in exchange for competitive pricing. Finally, set clear **expectations on revisions, deadlines, and deliverables** to maintain high standards without unexpected costs.

Make sure you jive - hope on a discovery call with your potential freelancer to determine if you’re a good fit to work together. 1) Ensure you’re on the same page about intentions and expectations. Do they seem to feel confident about helping you solve the problems in your way, and meet your growth goals? 2) Build rapport - if you can’t carry on a conversation harmoniously it may not be realistic to expect that they can capture the tone of your brand and best represent your values and message 3) Start with a test project. Get to know your communication styles and make sure it’s a good fit before moving too quickly.

I feel that a paid test is the best opportunity to see where the writer is with their current skill set, ability and flow of words. This way companies can have a better view of seeing whether or not the writer is an aligned fit for the present needs of the company.
