Your golf course is empty during slow periods. How can you attract more golfers?

Empty fairways are a missed opportunity. Attract more golfers by offering creative incentives and unique experiences. Here's how:

  • Special promotions: Introduce discounted rates or package deals during off-peak times to entice golfers.

  • Engaging events: Host themed tournaments or social events to create buzz and draw in crowds.

  • Partnerships: Collaborate with local businesses for cross-promotions that benefit both parties.

What other strategies have you found successful?

In my experience there are 3 key activities to consider when trying to increase golf course occupancy. Firstly, you must consider is the price correct. Looking at your conversion percentage of lookers to bookers is a great way to better understand this. It is also important considering your competitor pricing and course condition. Secondly, how are you trying to attract golfers... are they getting the right message from your golf course, on the right marketing channel and what is your booking journey like. The pricing might be right, but do golfers know about it and can they book it. Finally, track the activity you do and monitor the results, then you'll know what works!

Subject to geographic, socio-economic and demographic considerations: 1: Local Community Engagement: Engage with local communities by hosting charity events, school programmes and community sports days to foster goodwill and attract local players. 2: Health and Wellness Integration: Incorporate health and wellness activities such as yoga, fitness classes or wellness retreats to attract a broader audience. 3: Partnerships with Luxury Brands: Form partnerships with luxury brands to offer exclusive experiences and attract high-net-worth individuals. 4: Tech Innovations: Integrate technology like mobile apps for booking, virtual caddies and GPS-enabled golf carts to enhance the golfer experience and attract tech-savvy players.

Love this! For our golf course clients we've seen local leagues geared toward the chamber, businesses, dads, moms. Couple's packages, event-team building experiences. Private v Public requires additional thought, but golfers want a great experience and they love a deal/value add

Why add golfers? Maybe it's a bad time for golfers, beit weather or just time of day; but a great time for something else. Maybe leverage your golf course to diversify offerings. Lunch and Walk, most golf courses run a kitchen. Perhaps offer an affordable lunch and an invitation for patrons to walk the course. Yoga Classes, rent space during the slow times to Yoga or other fitness instructors to run classes on the green. Those are examples, I am sure there are other things depending on community, culture, and location.

    1. Leverage dynamic pricing during these opportunities on your sheet. Maybe it’s also increasing price with dynamic pricing in areas that are strong to help push some business to your shoulder spots. 2. Twilight and Super Twilight opportunities for rate breaks. 3. Special rate programming for your members or any memberships you have. Maybe range membership includes a special twilight rate. 4. 3rd party opportunities can be impactful as well. Some golfers just want a deal. Try and leverage those relationships.

In many African nations, golf courses sit underutilized during off-peak times—yet there's an incredible opportunity to turn this around. Think about rebranding your golf course as a place for community connection, not just a sport. Imagine introducing "Twilight Golf" specials or offering discounted rates during weekdays. You could also tap into growing interest in wellness by hosting yoga classes on the greens or even showcasing African music festivals. Just like Nairobi’s rich culture, your course has the potential to become more than just a place to play—it could be a vibrant social hub. Engage with local influencers, promote packages to tourists, and watch the golfers flood in.

Free 3 hole playing lessons. I did this at one facility I worked at, it went slow at first, eventually it grew and it turned into more overall revenue. Customer paid for 9/18 Greens fees/Cart fees. Lesson(s) and driving range revenue all increased. Merch sales increased, that in turn helped snack bar and dining room revenue also. Players were happy, they felt as if they got something for free in a lesson, and I built some comradery and friendships with them. You can always generate interest for something we all love. What about a 9 hole midday round including a lunch plate of some sort? Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Hot dog, chips, soda, coffee, bottled water. All of those things you can make on the fly.
