To align senior leadership goals with data governance objectives, involve leaders early to shape strategies and align with the organization's mission. Clearly demonstrate how governance supports leadership goals, such as strategic decision-making, risk reduction, and operational efficiency, using metrics like data quality and compliance improvements. Utilize tools like dashboards to track progress and ensure scalability. Establish feedback loops to adapt strategies to evolving needs and share success stories to build trust. Address disconnects by finding common ground, empowering leadership champions, and fostering collaboration through joint workshops and task forces, ensuring sustainable alignment.

Often overlooked, data is an asset. We must invest in our data like we do any other strategic resource if we expect to get dividends from it. Investment often includes correcting errors, normalizing data, setting up government structures, and analyzing the quality on a recurring basis to ensure compliance with expectations.

Start by deeply understanding the strategic goals of your senior leadership. Are they focused on digital transformation, regulatory compliance, customer experience, or operational efficiency? Conduct interviews or attend leadership meetings to grasp their priorities and concerns. For example, if the leadership aims to improve customer satisfaction, highlight how effective data governance ensures accurate and reliable customer data for decision-making. Secure leadership support by delivering quick wins that align with their goals. For example: • Create a central repository for regulatory reports to simplify audits. Quick wins build trust and demonstrate the value of data governance initiatives early in the process.

For data governance to be achieved, we need to understand business problems flowing from top of the house senior leadership teams. Once the problem statements are defined, next step is to identify use cases and sponsorship for each of the use cases. Next up is identity low hanging fruits (without any investments) of KPI data that is available and data that is not there (for which funding is required). Next up is to define a roadmap of execution, resourcing and funding required with blessings from top management. And finally, create a strategic operative model for on-going check-ins, progress follow ups and de-briefing sessions so that everyone in the organisation is aware of what is getting built. In short, commercialize!

To align senior leadership you've to keep in mind data serve only one purpose: contributing to meet organisation objectives. How difficult that can be? You’ve to define the risks that unreliability and unavailability of data puts on the goals of the organization. And take action to mitigate these risks. And, the above universal rule applies independently of an organisation’s data maturity. Neither should a data maturity level define an action plan. The data-oriented action plan is defined by the probability and severity of the current data risks.
