This presentation discusses retaining and regaining author rights when publishing work. It outlines problems with current publishing practices that restrict author rights. The goal is enabling authors by providing information on statutory mechanisms to terminate existing assignments and exclusive licenses. It also discusses author addenda as a way for authors to modify conventional publishing agreements and retain non-exclusive rights to use their work for teaching and professional activities. While uptake of addenda was initially limited, it helped educate scholars about author rights issues. The presentation calls for improvements to addenda and engagement with stakeholders to further support open access publishing models that provide more freedoms to authors over time.
