Congratulations, Kiersten!

You may remember back in the summer we were sharing various connections we all had with regions of the United States. I introduced my cousin’s daughter, Kiersten, and she shared her love for the Midwest region with us. I asked her if she would send us a spring photo of the farmlands of Iowa, and here it is.

She has been tackling the Forty Book Challenge along with us this year, and she just finished! Congratulations to another mighty reader! Thank you for encouraging us by joining us!

Blessings

To prepare our hearts for Resurrection Day, we spent one Bible class last week in specific song and praise together. Each group chose a song that they felt would help us focus on our Redeemer, and they also chose a theme for their prayers.

Group one chose “I Need You” by Jet Trouble.

“God, please help remind me of the things I cannot see,When I’m broken down, defeated, believing lies from the enemy.God, please help remind me of the day death lost its sting,That I know You have a plan in the midst of suffering.”

They chose the theme of blessings as they led us in prayer.

Group two chose “Demons” by Josiah Queen.

“And I won’t buy those lies.
They can’t take control over this life of mine.
I’ve been fully ransomed by the blood of Christ.
Darkness has to leave up in this light, oh.”

They chose the theme of salvation for their prayers of thanks.

Group three chose “Thankful” by Forrest Frank.

“Today I’ve got so much to be thankful for.I woke up this morning thinking, ‘Thank You, Lord.’For giving me everything I could ever need and more,I’ve got so much to be thankful for.”

Of course, their prayer theme was thankfulness.

Group four chose “Mighty Fortress” by Martin Luther.

“Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God’s own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.”

Each other was their prayer theme.

I wish every single one of you parents and grandparents could have been in our room during this Bible time. It was powerful and beautiful. All I could think the whole time was, “Thank You, Lord, for these families, for these children.”

Smile

Today at lunch, one of our young scholars created a “waves” science quiz for Mr. Doering just for the fun of it. The topic was out of the blue for him, and he did very well. 🙂

I love that these children are so invested in and captivated by what they are learning that they share, explore, and create in ways like this. It was one of my utterly delighted teacher smiles of the day.

Math Madness Afternoon

One of our cherished yearly events is Math Madness Afternoon. The whole elementary school is full of math fun, and the students get to roam from game to game all afternoon. Some of this year’s treats included Marshmallow Geometry, The Floor is Lava (math edition), Math Baseball, Artful Math, Recycling Bowling, Angular Jumps, Math Stacking Competition, and so much more! Our third/fourth room was a Math Lounge full of board games, a Tenzi table, an origami table, and abundant STEM materials. Plus snacks!

Our Iditarod Trail

Off we go to the Pacific region of the United States!

We started with an Alaska scavenger hunt as a warm up, where we discovered the name of the huge dogsledding race in Alaska each spring, the Iditarod!

What better way to discover more about the geography of Alaska than sledding along with our mushers! We spent two weeks following the race, honing our viewing skills, reading dogsledding books, and journaling about our discoveries.

For fun, every page we read counted as a mile on the trail, and we tried to outrace our favorite musher by “sledding” the 1,049 miles to Nome before they did. Ferdinand, Charlotte, and Nathan reached Nome during the race! We gave them a husky howl and sent them under the “Burled Arch” to celebrate.

Every day we danced together to “I Did, I Did, I Did the Iditarod Trail.” It was a fantastic race.
