The Start of Something by Miranda Dickinson

Two lonely people.
One note in the window.
And what happens when they reach out…

Lachlan Wallace is stuck at home after a car accident stalled his army career. With months of physiotherapy still to endure and only his rescue dog and cat for company, he’s taken to gazing out of the window, watching the world spin on without him. And then he notices a vase of flowers on the windowsill of the apartment opposite his. Drawn to their hope and colour, he decides to reach out and sticks a message in his window…

Bethan Gwynne is a stranger in a new town. Bringing up her son Noah by herself, she is slowly rebuilding her life, but loneliness is one obstacle she has yet to overcome. She’s intrigued by a glimpse of her neighbour in the apartment across from hers – and then, one evening, she sees a message in his window just for her:

WHAT ARE THOSE FLOWERS CALLED?

And so begins a love story of two people reaching out, daring to trust a stranger…

The Start of Something is the latest novel by one of my favourite authors Miranda Dickinson, a novel that touches on loneliness, friendship, healing and overcoming battles. One thing I love about Miranda’s characters is that they are so well developed they always feel as though they are characters we are reconnecting with because they have such big hearts and gentle personalities that instantly makes us warm to them as we stand in their corners cheering them on for a happy ever after!
The storyline alternates between new neighbours Lachlan and Bethan who are both at a point in their lives where they are trying to overcome a challenge in their lives whilst the sting of loneliness is looming which is what prompts Lachlan to put a message in his window to Bethan which is the start of a endearing communication between the two who need each other more than they know.
After lockdown we can all appreciate what the lack of communication has on us so it was easy to relate to Lochlan being cooped up in his flat needing a friend and the idea of communicating through posters in the window is something new to me in books but I am sure there are many of us who used this form of communication over the last year!
I loved the relationship that blossomed between Bethan and Lochlan, it was humorous at times too especially with their biscuit education which I think I could educate them a little more on! Just as I thought the messages in the window was beginning to become a bit drawn out the author change tack at just the right time to keep my interest piqued and the storyline picked back up and had me intrigued in what was going to happen to Lochlan.
Although we had the romance gently blossoming between the two I loved that the author also took the approach for us to get to know each of the characters in their day to day lives away from each other which is where we see the characters depth build when we find out more about their background and what has got them into the situations they face now.
The romance was predictable and a little far fetched falling in love having barely met in person but the hopeless romantic in me still enjoyed this book so much and I think it was the perfect uplifting, heartwarming, addictive novel that I have read in a long time and it was lovely to find myself immersed in this authors writing once again.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea by Miranda Dickinson

Today on the blog it is my stop on the blog tour for Somewhere Beyond the Sea which is the new release by a favourite author of mine, Miranda Dickinson.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the latest release by Miranda Dickinson and I can say the storyline is just as beautiful as the alluring cover. I have loved every book Miranda has ever written but this book is completely different to her previous novels and is by far my favourite.
Seren has lost her father and she now has the weight of his previous commitments on her shoulder from his failing business to his ambition to protect the heritage of a local known astronomer from becoming a new housing complex. Taken so much on has left Seren questioning who she is or what she wants from life but she can not let her father down.
Jack Dixon is a newly single parent to the adorable Nessie but the struggles of a single parent have already reared their ugly head. Desperate to be able to secure a job so he can provide stability for his daughter may mean that he misses his chance for true love.
This was such a beautiful storyline weaved around two much loved characters Seren and Jack. I found Seren such a relatable character she has lost her way and is always putting others needs and wants first not wanting to disappoint those around her and not wanting to fail on the last thing she is able to do for her father. She needs to have more confidence and belief in herself and to start put herself first as she is so selfless but this is what makes her such a warm and genuine character. Jack is a very hard working and determined character who is also very honest especially when taking about the loss of his partner. His love for his daughter shines through and the bond they have is very special. Jack’s daughter Nessie is full of energy and has a wonderful imagination as well as a strong head on her shoulders.
The descriptive writing is beautiful especially surrounding the sea glass stars and the setting of St Ives. Sea glass is a big feature in this book and I can’t believe I have never come across it before, I was soon scrolling through google pictures and articles looking at the treasure and I am desperate to find my own sea glass. I have only briefly stopped off in St Ives once but Miranda Dickinson has touched my heart and piqued my interest with this idyllic location and I am desperate to return to St Ives and soak in the sights and feel all the feels she pours into this book.
I found this such an honest and emotional read with a touch of magic. It touches on grief as well as romance and the journey of finding oneself as well as parental struggles. I found myself putting this book down not wanting it to end only to then minutes later be drawn back to it desperate to see what happens next.
This is the prefect book to take away with you on your travels this year to enjoy reading whilst soaking up the sun.

Searching for a Silver Lining by Miranda Dickinson

Matilda Bell is left heartbroken when she falls out with her beloved grandfather just before he dies. Haunted by regret, she makes a promise that will soon change everything . . .

When spirited former singing star Reenie Silver enters her life, Mattie seizes the opportunity to make amends. Together, Mattie and Reenie embark on an incredible journey that will find lost friends, uncover secrets from the glamorous 1950s and put right a sixty-year wrong.

I have read every one of Miranda Dickinson’s books and I am a big fan as her books never disappoint. I have to admit to being a little nervous about this book as when I read the synopsis it mentioned about uncovering secrets from the 1950’s and as much as I love uncovering secrets, I am not comfortable with the 1950’s as my knowledge of that era is limited but luckily enough the authors beautiful writing style I have come to know and love soon had me immersed in the storyline.

Mattie and Rennie strike an unlikely friendship on a chance meeting when Mattie arrives at the care home where Rennie lives to do a presentation. The pair soon become good friends and begin to open up to each other and form a plan to help each other with Mattie being able to make amends to her grandfather and Reenie being able to apologise to the band members whose careers she damaged.  The pair embark on a journey along with the handsome Gil to find the original band members of The Silver Five and right the wrongs from the past.

At the heart of this storyline is such a strong friendship between Mattie and Reenie and I found this so endearing. Reenie showers Mattie with her stories from the highlights of her life and in turn it helps Mattie to feel more connected to her Grandfather. We don’t get to meet Mattie’s Grandfather as he has just passed away at the start of the book but we get to build a picture of his character through the short sharp diary entries that pop up throughout the book which I thought was a lovely touch and I looked forward to each entry to see what was revealed.

I have read many books about road trips but it is easy to say none of them are quite like this! Reenie brings a light hearted humour to the book with her diva-ish ways, Mattie  is the one to keep their feet on the ground and make sure things run smoothly ( well as smooth as they can be with Reenie!) and Gil provides up with our eye candy and a little sprinkling of romance.

The authors love of music shines through in this book helped with the soundtracks at the beginning of each chapter, she has quite clearly poured her heart and soul into this book and it is one to be proud of.
I did find the beginning of the book a little slow to start which I haven’t found in the authors previous books but this is soon redeemed and I am so pleased I persevered otherwise I would have missed out on this wonderful journey.

If you love books that feature friendships, secrets, forgiveness and a  diva-ish octogenarian then this book will tick all the boxes!

Searching for a Silver Lining Blog Tour Miranda Dickinson

Today I am thrilled to be kicking of the blog tour for #MySilverLining
and I am joined by the sparkly Miranda Dickinson who is going to share with us what inspired her to write Searching for a Silver Lining.

I’ve always wanted to write a road trip story and over the years have played around with possible ideas. But when I dreamed up Mattie Bell and Reenie Silver I knew their story needed an incredible journey at its heart. I love the idea of unlikely and unusual friendships, and the possibility of writing one that grows and develops during a physical journey really excited me.

I’m also a huge fan of 1950s music and fashion, so it was great to be able to work this into the tale, with a modern day story that slowly unlocks secrets from sixty years ago. My love of Fifties’ music is reflected in the book, both in the story and in the chapter headings, each of which is named after a 1950s hit song.

Being a singer (my ‘other’ job when I’m not writing), I really wanted to write about a young band chasing after their dreams, in a time where people wanted to believe anything was possible. The dynamics of five completely different characters thrown together in pursuit of a shared dream – and the tensions, rifts and challenges that causes – fascinates me and was really fun to bring to the page.

Searching for a Silver Lining is a book about forgiveness, redemption and the power of friendship – themes I’ve written about before but which I feel are so important to us still today. Through Mattie and Reenie’s exciting, dramatic and – it has to be said – slightly barmy journey together, I hope I’ve been able to create a story that makes you laugh, cry, and believe that anything is possible! Thanks so much for reading this blog exclusive! For more, follow my Searching for a Silver Lining blog tour. I really hope you enjoy Mattie’s story!

It began with a promise . . .   Matilda Bell is left heartbroken when she falls out with her beloved grandfather just before he dies. Together, Mattie and Reenie embark on an incredible journey that will find lost friends, uncover secrets from the glamorous 1950s and put right a sixty-year wrong.  Touchingly funny, warm and life-affirming, this is a sparkling story of second chances. A Parcel for Anna Browne by Miranda Dickinson

There has been a huge blog tour for A Parcel for Anna Browne with so many bloggers wanting to show their support for this sparkly novel and today it is my stop on the tour bus and I am so pleased to finally be able to share my review for this exciting, uplifting and heartwarming book by the incredibly talented Miranda Dickinson.

Anna Browne is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life. Her day job as a receptionist in bustling London isn't exactly her dream, yet she has everything she wants. But someone thinks Anna Browne deserves more . . .
When a parcel addressed to Anna Browne arrives, she has no idea who has sent it. Inside she finds a beautiful gift - one that is designed to be seen. And so begins a series of incredible deliveries, each one bringing Anna further out of the shadows and encouraging her to become the woman she was destined to be. As Anna grows in confidence, others begin to notice her - and her life starts to change.
But who is sending the mysterious gifts, and why?

One of the books I have been looking forward to all year is A Parcel for Anna Browne by Miranda Dickinson, the synopsis won me over straight away and the delicate and sparkly cover seemed to seal the deal for me although the hefty size of the book at 511 pages was a bit of a shocker.

Anna Browne isn’t a woman who stands out from the crowd. She has a good heart and everyone she meets can’t help but warm to her but she is a normal woman who seems to fade into the background, that is until an unexpected parcel arrives for her at work with an exquisite gift inside but Anna has no idea who on earth would have sent such a thoughtful gift for her anonymously. As each parcel arrives everyone including Anna herself starts to notice a change in her as she starts to blossom but who is the mystery sender?

This is by far my favourite book by Miranda Dickinson, I was surprised how quick I read the book given the amount of pages and yet the storyline didn’t feel drawn out at all. The idea of the mystery gifts was something that really appealed to me, the thought of someone taking the time to pick such thoughtful gifts to give to someone and the consequences of the gift how it can really brighten someone’s day. I found this made the book such an uplifting and exciting read as with each parcel that arrives I was eager to find out what it would contain, and let me tell you sometimes I could have shook Anna she has such will power I would have been unwrapping that present the moment I had it in my hands!

There are such fantastic characters in this book and I was over the moon to see that the character Rea the gossiping journalist was inspired by me it is a surreal thing to read a book with a character with my unusual name!

Anna was impossible not to love from the moment we meet her as she is such a genuine and lovable woman and the secret parcels couldn’t have gone to a more deserving character. There is some great office banter too especially from the theories that dear Ted came out with!

I had an idea at the start of the book who the mystery sender could be but half way through the book my suspicion completely changed and I guessed who it was but I don’t think it is a predictable book but having read so many thrillers and crime books recently I am looking more closely for hidden clues that may lead us down the wrong path and this was how I managed to pick up on something that made me change my mind on my original suspect!

This was a wonderful uplifting read that ticked all the boxes for me and this one will be staying on my shelf and I will definitely be recommending to friends and family and I may even attempt to send a few mysterious parcels to brighten someones day too.

I'll Take New York by Miranda Dickinson

Have you ever given up on love?

When her boyfriend lets her down for the last time, Brooklyn bookshop owner Bea James makes a decision – no more. No more men, no more heartbreak, and no more pain.

Psychiatrist Jake Steinmann is making a new start too, leaving his broken marriage behind in San Francisco. From now on there'll just be one love in his life: New York. At a party where they seem to be the only two singletons, Bea and Jake meet, and decide there’s just one thing for it. They will make a pact: no more relationships.

But the city has other plans . . .

I have a few authors who I make sure I pre-order each of their books as soon as they are available on amazon and Miranda Dickinson is one of those authors for me, I have read and enjoyed every single book by her and I follow her on twitter to keep up with what she has planned for her next release, so you can imagine my excitement when I found out that I’ll Take New York was a sequel ( kind of ) to A Fairytale of New York which is my favourite book by Miranda Dickinson.

We have two main characters in this book Bea and Jake who are such wonderful characters. Bea is going to be a favourite with a lot of us readers, she is soft natured loveable and she not only loves books but she also owns a bookshop with her best friend Russ. At the beginning of the book we see Bea waiting with her family for the arrival of her long term boyfriend Otis to arrive for a special occasion and they all have a pretty good idea as to what this occasion will be but there is one problem, Otis doesn’t arrive. After constantly being let down by Otis Bea decides that she needs to move on with her life in her own way and it is when she meets Jake at a party where they are the only single people there that they both swore off relationships and spark a new friendship.

Jake is sure to be a hit with the ladies he is a handsome, successful male lead who has had his heart broken and is having to start all over again. Miranda knows how to create the perfect male lead for us to drool over! It was so good to be reintroduced to some much loved previous characters, Rosie and Ed and to see what is going on in their life since we left them.

The thing I love most about Miranda’s writing style is her descriptions, she makes things come alive in her books especially the settings and this was the case with this book as she describes the sights around New York and the mouth-wateringly good food as well as the pure emotions that each of the characters have it gives life to this fictional book.

The storyline was a little predictable but in this case the joy wasn’t in the ending itself it was the journey she took us on to get there that made this a heart warming read.

This is yet another fabulous read by this author that I have already found myself recommending to friends.

Take A Look At Me Now by Miranda Dickinson

What a difference a day makes… Nell Sullivan has always been known as ‘Miss Five-Year Plan’. But when she finds herself jobless and newly single on the same day, Nell decides it is time to stop planning and start taking chances. Nell blows her redundancy cheque on a trip of lifetime to a place where anything is possible – San Francisco. There she meets a host of colourful characters, including the intriguing and gorgeous Max. Very soon the city begins to feel like Nell’s second home.

But when it’s time to return to London, will she leave the ‘new Nell’ behind?
And can the magic of San Francisco continue to sparkle thousands of miles away?

I am a big fan of Miranda Dickinson and I have read all of her books. I have eagerly been awaiting her new release Take a Look at Me Now and as I sat down to read this last night I have already devoured it and had to get started on the review as I am still so hyped about this book, I just hope my review will do this book justice.

Nell never takes and risks and is never spontaneous she always has everything carefully planned out, that is until she is made redundant and her love life has a spanner in the works too. Unsure of what path to take next in her life Nell decides to blow her redundancy pay on an 8 week trip to San Francesco to stay with her cousin Lizzie to enjoy the sights and to try and get her head straight as to what it is she wants to do, but will this exciting new city capture her heart and prevent her from returning home?

WOW…..

This book is by far Miranda Dickinson’s best and that is saying something as I have loved all of her books but this is one of those books that just wraps you up and leaves you with a smile on your face though you are sad that it has come to an end. There are so many wonderful characters in this book, Nell is such a delightful character who I instantly loved. As Nell meets the various characters in this book it feels as though we are meeting them too as they are all so full bodied and loveable.

The author has quite clearly done her research when it comes to the sites of San Francisco her attention to detail is fantastic I felt as though I was walking around the amazing and sites, everything just felt as though it was coming to life through the pages. It has never been somewhere that has been on my wish to visit list but after reading this I would love to go! This book was mouth wateringly good, the food was so tantalising, I just wanted to pull the pancakes and cheesecakes out of the pages!

I loved the twists that were created in this book, they were unexpected and when I was reading what I thought was an already perfect read to then have this unexpected twist was just an added bonus. I loved the storyline it had everything that you could want and hope for in a perfect read, romance, perfect setting, quirky characters, twists and turns, what more could we ask for.

This is a definite must read, you all need to add this to your to be read piles. It will have you gripped from the first page and will immerse you in the storyline right until the very last page.

When I Fall In Love by Miranda Dickinson

Miranda is back this year with another fantastic read When I Fall in Love, this lady continually brings us stunning covers containing beautiful storylines you have got to love her.

Elsie Maynard never expected to be starting again...

...but eighteen months on from the biggest challenge of her life, she is doing just that –because she made a promise to the person who believed in her the most. Determined to step into her uncertain future, Elsie meets handsome Oliver Hogarth, who seems intent on winning her heart; she inadvertently founds a choir, and overcomes obstacles – most of which involve arrogant Torin Stewart. Then a heartfelt request brings her to Paris – and the final item on ‘The List’ that she never dared complete.

Can Elsie follow her heart and put her past to rest?

I loved our heroine in this book, Elsie has just had the toughest eighteen months of her life but she now has to take the steps to start building a new life. Out of all of the storylines Miranda has brought us this is the one that touched my heart the most. Elsie has an edge of vulnerability about her but after finding out what it is that has occurred in her life you actually think how well she is coping and you can’t help but hope that with each step she takes in building her new life she will start to mend her heartache and start to find happiness. She is a very selfless character and is instantly loveable.

I have to say this is one of the rare books where I loved each and individual character in this book from members of the Maynard family who really show the meaning of family support, to each member of Elsie’s new venture all who are very different from each other and bring a something different to the storyline.
I loved both Torin and Oliver who were our male characters and I never quite knew all the way through who if either of them Elsie would open her heart to. Miranda’s descriptive writing is back again giving us a mini tour of Paris which has made me rather excited about my trip there for New Year now.

It is quite clear that Miranda has brought her own personal interests in music and singing into this book and I think that is why the book flows so well because it was so natural for her to right about something that is a great interest to her. I was hoping that there would be a little hint of festivity in this book but unfortunately there wasn’t any, and yet I still thoroughly enjoyed this touching read.

A very emotional and moving read that I highly recommend.

Book Review over all

It Started With A Kiss by Miranda Dickinson.

After what seems like a life time of waiting I finally got my little hands on a copy of Miranda Dickinson’s It Started With A Kiss ( Thank you Miranda!!) For those of you who follow this blog you will remember we had Miranda over for an interview about her up and coming book, if you missed it here is your chance to check it out.
I have enjoyed Miranda’s previous two novels and so when I was looking for Christmas themed books for our Christmas Competition I came across the stunning cover of It Started With A Kiss and I couldn’t wait to get started.

Plot
As the singer in a wedding band, Romily Parker has seen her fair share of happy endings, even though her own love life isn't quite as simple.
On the last Saturday before Christmas, (shortly after disastrously declaring her love for best friend Charlie), Romily has a brief encounter with a handsome stranger whose heart-stopping kiss changes everything.
Determined to find him again, Romily embarks on a yearlong quest, helped (and sometimes hindered) by enthusiastic Uncle Dudley, cake-making Auntie Mags and flamboyant Wren. Will she find the man of her dreams? Or could true love be closer than she thinks?

My Opinion
The first thing which stands out for me in this book is the descriptive writing that Miranda Dickinson uses to set the scene straight from the start of the book. I felt as though I was there in the Christmas market with Romily which helps the storyline feel more real.

The book starts off at such a fast pace and throws us straight into a gripping storyline. By the end of the first chapter I loved the character of Romily she is so easy to connect to and you find your heart going out to her.
This book has a real mixture of content including Christmas, romance, music and suspense which means there is something for everyone in this book. I really couldn’t predict what I thought the ending was going to be in this book and this is what made it such a page turner.

This book is a must for those Christmas stockings!

Author Interviews - Miranda Dickinson

I am a huge Miranda Dickinson fan. I loved both of her previous novels Fairytale of New York and Welcome to my World. Miranda now has a new novel which is due out 10th November and we have now got the official cover to gaze at until it is released!

I love the new cover for It Started With A Kiss it has got a bright and fresh feel to it but yet it still manages to keep the Miranda Dickinson signature look. I for one am very excited and cannot wait for this novel to be released just in time for Christmas!

We have got a special treat today. Miranda has agreed to come over and chat to us about her new novel. So let’s all give a warm welcome to Miranda Dickinson......

It Started with a Kiss is your 3rd novel can you tell us a little bit about it?

It Started With a Kiss is a story about following your heart. Shortly after disastrously declaring her love for her best friend Charlie, Romily Parker has a brief encounter with a handsome stranger when he comes to her aid. He kisses her and then has to leave - before Romily can ask for his name or number. But their meeting was so amazing that Romily decides to spend the next year (until Christmas Eve) searching for him again. Romily is a wedding singer in The Pinstripes wedding band with her friends, so the search goes through a year of them playing at other people's weddings - good and bad!

Your heroine in It Started with a Kiss is Romily, can you describe her to us in 6 words?

Positive,
Creative,
Fun,
Heart-chaser,
Brave,
Loyal.

What inspired you to write It Started With a Kiss?

Like Romily, I sing with a wedding band and I love the unique view of weddings that it gives us. When you work at a wedding you get to be a real 'fly-on-the-wall' - you can see family feuds, rivalries, desperate pulling attempts and embarrassing relatives, but also are privileged to see really touching, beautiful moments in other people's special days. I wanted to write about this and thought it would give an excellent backdrop for Romily's search to find the stranger who kissed her.

The idea of the quest came about when I was talking with my friend Kim about 'what-if' moments - where you wonder what would have happened if you had pursued them. When I spoke to more of my friends it turned out that almost everyone had a 'what-if' story - like my friend who saw a girl he really liked on the tube in London and posted a message on twitter in the hope that she might see it. It's all about believing that anything is possible and having the guts to go for it!

The location for Romily's chance meeting with her handsome stranger is Birmingham's famous German Christmas Market, which takes over the centre of the city shopping area every year. It's really magical with coloured lights, music and sweet little wooden stalls selling everything from hand-carved wooden toys and beautiful jewellery to gingerbread and German Berliner doughnuts. I love it there and it's the most romantic setting - so the perfect choice for Romily to meet the handsome stranger!

You have been keeping a video diary whilst writing It Started With A Kiss which is available for readers to follow on your blog, what made you decide to do this and do you plan on carrying on with the diary for book 4?

My video diary - or 'vlog' - started out as a daft New Year's resolution to myself to chronicle a year writing, editing and eventually publishing my novel. The main reason for this was that I wanted to remember the various stages of the book, and I thought that maybe one or two people might be interested to see it. I've been blown away by the response - over seven thousand people a month have been watching my vlogs!

The loveliest thing about it is that people have really got involved - asking me fantastic questions so I can give everyone the information they really want to see. It's meant that I haven't felt alone in the process (an occupational hazard for most writers) and that I've been inspired to write the story for the lovely people who have been watching my vlog. It feels like It Started With a Kiss is something that we all can share in - and that's the best feeling!

I think I'll definitely carry it on for next year - I'm addicted to making the videos now and as long as people want to watch them, I'll continue making them!

You have already started writing book number 4 ( Rea does a little happy dance!) what can you tell us about your plans for this book?

It's all at the very early stages of writing (just two chapters so far) but already the characters are appearing and I think you'll love them! I can't say too much at the moment, but the book will be a bit of an ensemble piece - I wanted to write something where you get an insight into several characters' feelings and views of a situation. The main character, Elsie Maynard, is someone I know you're going to love, and there's a brilliant character called Woody Jensen, former front man of 80s one-hit-wonder rock band Hellfinger, who now sees himself as a bit of a guru - I'm loving writing him at the moment! There will be music, rivalry, comedy, love... and maybe even the odd jazz-hand!

How will you be celebrating It Started with a Kiss being published?

I'm hoping to organise a book launch that's also a gig, with my friends in the wedding band playing. I've written some songs specifically for the wedding band in the book - there's one song called 'Last First Kiss' that Romily and her friend Jack write in Chapter 8 - so we'll perform those at the gig (and will video it, of course!)

What was the last book you finished reading?

To My Best Friends by Sam Baker. It's an absolutely beautiful portrayal of a group of friends trying to honour the last wishes of a woman who didn't know them as well as she thought. I loved every minute!

If you were stranded on a desert Island what would be your 3 items you would want to have with you.

That's a tough one! Erm... a guitar to entertain myself (and annoy the local wildlife), a humungous notebook and a pen (preferably with everlasting ink!)

Thankyou very much to Miranda and we wish you every success in the launch of It Started with a Kiss. If you are interested in the vlog we mentioned in the interview please head over and check it out on the following link.
