Paragraph block

Last reviewed on March 4, 2026

The Paragraph block is the default block type for text added to the editor. Therefore, it is probably the block you will use most. This guide will show you how to use the Paragraph block for writing text in the WordPress editor.

Add the Paragraph block

The Paragraph block is added automatically when you type or paste text into the editor. You can also add a Paragraph block using the + block inserter:

  1. Click the + icon to open the block inserter.
  2. Search for “paragraph.”
  3. Click the Paragraph block to add it.

Paragraph block toolbar

When you click on the block, a toolbar of options will appear above it:

The Paragraph block parent toolbar.
The Paragraph block toolbar.

The Paragraph block has the following options in its toolbar:

  • Drag block handle to change the block position
  • Move the block up or down
  • Align the text to the left, center, or right
  • AI options

  • Make the highlighted text italic
  • Insert hyperlink
  • Text formatting options
  • More block options

The additional options in the Paragraph block are as follows:

To use these options to apply formatting to your text:

Highlight (Text color)

Use the Highlight option to change the text color of a few specific words or characters, or set a colored background behind specific words or characters in a Paragraph block. To add text color to just some words (rather than all the text in the block), follow these steps:

  1. Select the text you’d like to format.
  2. Click the downward arrow in the block toolbar.
  3. Click the Highlight menu item.

Inline image

The Inline image option displays an image within the same line as the Paragraph block, although it doesn’t have the same flexibility as using an Image block (the recommended method to display an image.)

To add an inline image to a Paragraph block:

  1. Click the downward arrow in the block toolbar.
  2. Choose the “Inline image” option.
  3. Select the image you wish to use from the Media Library window.
  4. Click the “Insert button to add the inline image.

To change the size of an inline image:

  1. Click on the image.
  2. Type or select a number for the image width.
  3. Click the curved arrow button to apply the changes.

Keyboard input

Use the Keyboard input option to add the <kbd> HTML tag to selected text.

When you add the <kbd> tag, the content inside it is displayed in the browser’s default monospace font. It is typically used when writing a keyboard command, for example:

To copy the content, highlight it and press CTRL + C on your keyboard.

Paragraph block settings

When you select a block, you will find additional block settings in the right sidebar. If you do not see the sidebar, you may need to click the Settings icon in the top-right corner to bring up the settings. This icon looks like a square with two uneven columns:

The Paragraph block includes the following settings to adjust the appearance of all the text in that block:

Fit text

Fit text is a typography setting that automatically scales your text to stretch across the full width of the space it’s in.

To enable Fit text on a paragraph, follow these steps:

  1. Click on your Paragraph block.
  2. In the block settings sidebar, find the Typography section.
  3. Click the “Typography options” icon (three dots) and select the “Fit text” option.
  4. Toggle on the “Fit text” setting.
An arrow pointing from the ellipsis menu to the Fit text setting.

Your paragraph text will now stretch to match the full width of its container. As you resize your browser window or view the page on different devices, the text automatically scales to maintain that full-width appearance.

To disable fit text, return to the Typography settings and toggle off “Fit text“.

Set the number of columns

The Columns setting splits a Paragraph block‘s text into multiple columns, similar to a newspaper or magazine layout.

To set the number of columns for a paragraph, follow these steps:

  1. Click on your Paragraph block.
  2. In the block settings sidebar, find the Typography section.
  3. Click the “Typography options” icon (three dots) and select the “Columns” option.
  4. Enter the number of columns you want the paragraph text to span.

Your paragraph text will flow across the specified number of columns. To remove columns, return to the Typography settings, clear the “Columns” value, or set it to 1.

Attributes

Attributes are connected to custom fields or other dynamic data. Click the + icon to add paragraph attributes for content.
