Is there any way to disable the auto configuration during the install of backwpup?

I had an issue with the current install so uninstalled the backwpup plugin. Now when I try to reinstall it, I get a screen asking to configure the backups.

I chose to not have either of the backups (files or database) enabled and went through the screens. It then tried to create a full backup!!! I had not asked for this. I aborted it

I then looked at the settings screen and I have a ‘files and database’ job that I am unable to delete. When I click on the ‘delete’ icon nothing happens.

    So Uninstalled / reinstalled again

All I want is a database backup. So then during the ‘onboarding’ I disabled files backup and just enabled the database backup but when I finished the onboarding it still tired to create a full back up of the site. I had to abort it again. When I looked at the settings screen, again it had a ‘Files and database’ job and not the ‘database’ job I wanted and again I couldn’t delete the ‘files and database’ job

Why does it have to be this hard?

    Hi,

Thank you for the detailed feedback.

I completely understand your concern regarding the onboarding experience, especially when it appears to be creating something different from what you selected. I’ll make sure to pass your feedback regarding a possible onboarding skip option to the team.

Regarding the behavior itself, I tested this on a fresh installation and was not able to reproduce it. When selecting only the Database backup during onboarding, BackWPup created a Database-only job and the initial backup was also Database-only: https://shottr.cc/s/1kV7/SCR-20260605-pt7.png.

Could you please let me know which version of BackWPup you’re currently using?

Also, when you click the delete icon for the job, do you see any error messages in the browser console (F12 → Console tab)? A screenshot of the BackWPup page showing the created job would also be very helpful.

From your description, it sounds like something may be preventing the onboarding settings from being saved correctly, so I’d like to gather a bit more information before drawing conclusions.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

    Version 5.6.11

I did the uninstall and reinstall again and this time during onboarding I extensively modified the ‘files’ job before disabling it. This time it all worked correctly, so no idea if that is what helped or there was some other issue the other times. Although I definitely saw one of the times that even though I had disabled the files job at the first step, the option to specify the frequency was not greyed out for the files job at a later step.

As regards being unable to delete a job, yes there are console errors. See this link for the errors:

    https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZqQ0A5ZTc10g4OnaH0djiIh2vUqk4Hvxiyy

And just an FYI – the reason I uninstalled and reinstalled in the first place is that Backwpup had run an unscheduled job. It ran a full site backup, that was NOT any job that I had created. There are files on the site that I never include in a backup as they are too large, so my scheduled backup job excludes those files. The job ran in the middle of the night so it was not manually initiated by anyone.

Also quite often when I open the Backwpup settings screen I get some message about a job not running due to PID issues. This is random and so far I have ignored it. But it seems to me that nothing should ‘run’ when you just open the settings page.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thank you for the follow-up.

I’m glad the onboarding worked correctly after reinstalling and going through the setup again.

Regarding the delete issue, the console error is helpful. It shows that the delete request is reaching the BackWPup API, but the API is returning a 400 response for that job. After that, the UI also throws an additional JavaScript error while trying to display the response message.

This could happen if the job entry is incomplete, stale, or was created in an inconsistent state during the earlier onboarding attempts.

Could you please check whether the backup/job is already deleted on the server side? I’ll also report this internally so our developers can review it further.

Regarding the unexpected full backup, that is not expected behavior either. Since you mentioned the setup is now working correctly after reinstalling, I’d suggest monitoring the next scheduled run to see if it behaves as expected.

As for the PID-related message, we have seen that in some situations before, but I suggest ignoring it for now as it does not appear to be related to the current issue.

Since I have not been able to fully reproduce the behavior on my end, if you continue experiencing issues, please feel free to reach out through the support option available within the plugin. We’ll be happy to investigate further.

    Thanks

there may be a misunderstanding. I am not trying to delete an actual backup – i.e. the backup file

I am trying to delete the whole ‘job’ as per this image:
    https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZvVRA5Zat6v75g7898H4qCvWuDbl8bok707

If that is what you thought I meant, then how would I “check whether the backup/job is already deleted on the server side”?

    Hi,

Thank you for the clarification, and sorry for the misunderstanding.

I thought you were referring to deleting a backup file from the Backup History section, while you’re actually referring to deleting the entire backup job itself.

Looking again at the console error, I can see that the delete request is reaching the BackWPup API, but the API is returning a 400 response when attempting to delete the job. This suggests the request is being processed, but something is causing it to be rejected.

Since the onboarding process was also behaving unexpectedly earlier, it’s possible the job was created in an inconsistent state. However, I have not been able to reproduce this behavior on my end so far.

As a quick troubleshooting step, could you try temporarily deactivating the other plugins and then test whether the job can be deleted? This will help us determine whether another plugin is interfering with the request.

I have disabled all other plugins and I am still unable to delete a job.

I have looked in the options table at the backwpup_jobs option.

It seems to have 5 jobs defined (jobids 1,3,4,5,6) but I only have 2 jobs in the admin (5,6), so something has obviously gone wrong in the past.

    backwpup_first_backup_job_id has a value of 1

So I uninstalled and reinstalled again.

Uninstalling correctly removed all the backwpup entries from the options table

After install and PRIOR to onboarding I looked at the backwpup_jobs option. It had one job defined jobid 1

During onboarding I disabled the ‘files’ job (I did customise before disabling) and kept the ‘database’ job

After onboarding the backwpup_jobs option had TWO jobs defined jobid 1 and 3

Job id 3 is the visible one

Not sure if this is relevant, or the way it is supposed to be

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

The job ID 1 is for the first backup that happens during onboarding, and this is expected.

If you’re still unable to delete jobs after the reinstallation, this is likely something very specific to this installation and would require a closer investigation.

In that case, please reach out through the support option in the plugin (bottom-right corner) or via:
    https://backwpup.com/contact/

We’ll be happy to investigate it further.
