- Comments referring to me as very articulate, too emotional and clients assuming that my White male or female counterparts were the boss when actually I was their senior leader are just a few examples of the many stereotypes, biases, and prejudices I've heard throughout my career. A stereotype is an exaggerated belief, imagined or distorted truth about a person or a group. It's a generalization that allows for little or no individual differences or social variation. Prejudice is exactly how it sounds, prejudging someone before you know them based on their skin color, gender, age, race or ethnicity, or any other characteristic of their outward appearance. An unconscious bias is an opinion, positive or negative, that we have about a group or person. Biases are the attitudes or stereotypes that are taught and developed early in life.
