Passion is nice, but expertise is better — this is the advice Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach once got when he thought he knew what he should do next, and his boss set him straight. In this month’s #ThisIsWorking interview with LinkedIn Editor in Chief Daniel Roth, Miebach said he now shares this advice liberally. "Recently I was with our summer interns, and somebody said, 'You know, I'm following my passions and I like what you guys are doing here. What's your advice?' "I said, 'I love the fact that you're following your passion, but you should also just look at what you are really good at. What differentiates you.'" Do the thing that you can do better than most people, Miebach says, and be passionate about that. For more advice from Michael Miebach, watch the full episode, linked in the comments below.

Tired of being told to adapt? Suzy Welch, professor at NYU Stern School of Business and three-time NYT bestselling author, has a different take. In a world obsessed with reinvention and constant change, Suzy offers a bold counterpoint: “ The job for us is not to change and adapt,” she says, “but for us to figure out what our authentic lives are earlier and get there faster, because that is where we're going to find meaning and purpose and the kind of satisfaction that hopefully has an outcome of happiness.” This insight is at the heart of Suzy’s new book, “Becoming You,” which just launched this week. As Suzy explains, the real work of becoming who we’re meant to be isn’t about constant reinvention. It’s about tapping into these three things: ✅ Your deepest, most authentic values ✅ Your natural personality and talents ✅ The areas of economic and personal growth that excite you Catch Suzy’s full conversation with Jessi Hempel on Hello Monday for even more insights on authenticity, growth, and living a life that truly fits. We all make mistakes, but we're getting in our own way when we spiral about them, says Dr. Becky Kennedy. See why she tries to 'fail fast' and move on. What have you learned from your latest mistakes? ✍ : Fiona Clair
I snapped at one of my colleagues the other day. It wasn’t intentional. It happened fast—before I even realized what I was doing. And right after, the shame spiral kicked in. Why did I do that? I should know better. Ugh, the whole day is ruined now. Somehow, the idea of “failing fast” came to mind - and helped me get out of that spiral. After all, if someone on my team had “failed fast” with a product experiment, I’d say: “Interesting. What does this tell us? And what do you want to do next?” So I tried saying it to myself. “I snapped. Interesting. What does this tell me? And what do I want to do next?” I realized - I wasn’t even that annoyed at the person I snapped at. But I’m learning. And I can take responsibility and repair. Failing fast doesn’t mean brushing things off. It means facing them quickly—so you can grow, reconnect, and keep showing up. Final post in this little series coming next: how “fail fast” shows up in parenting—every single day.
