Tips for Increasing Viewer Engagement

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Viewer engagement refers to how actively people interact with and pay attention to your content, whether it’s a video, webinar, or presentation. Increasing engagement means encouraging viewers to participate, stay interested, and return for more, which is crucial for building loyalty and achieving business goals.

  • Invite interaction: Encourage your audience to join in through polls, questions, or chat features during your content, rather than saving all participation for the end.
  • Keep things dynamic: Switch up your delivery with stories, questions, visual aids, or changes in pace to recapture attention throughout your session.
  • Make content accessible: Design your materials so they’re easy to read, visually clear, and compatible with different devices, ensuring everyone can follow along without barriers.

Regardless of how great your ideas are in your virtual sales pitch, webinar, or team meeting… People are most likely checking their email, browsing social media, or working on other things while you present. How can you prevent that and actually get your audience to pay attention? Here are 4 of the most powerful techniques we use for our own virtual training courses: 1. Win the first five seconds According to research from the University of Toronto, people need only five seconds to gauge your charisma and leadership as a speaker. In virtual environments, this first impression is even more critical. To establish instant rapport: - Keep your posture open and inviting (avoid fidgeting, crossed arms, and closed-off postures) - Use open gestures that welcome the audience into your space - Gesture with your palms showing at a 45-degree angle - Speak with clear articulation and energy from the very first word The quickest way to lose your audience? Starting with tentative body language that signals you’re unsure or unprepared. 2. Design your presentation for virtual viewing When designing slides, assume varied viewing conditions. Design for the smallest likely device and the slowest likely Internet speed. Make your slides accessible by: - Using larger fonts (24-32pt) - Applying higher contrast colors - Limiting each slide to ONE clear idea - Adding more space between lines when using smaller text - Stripping excess content (you can provide additional information in a separate document) 3. Vary your delivery Our research shows the optimal length for linear presentations is just 16-30 minutes, while interactive ones can maintain engagement for 30-45 minutes. People’s attention will go through peaks and valleys during that time, so try these techniques to keep their attention: - Vary your speaking pace (faster to convey urgency, slower to express gravity) - Use intentional pauses to let key points land - Adjust your vocal tone (lower pitch for authority, higher for approachability) - Shift between slides, stories, and data at regular intervals Each change helps reset your audience’s attention and signals importance. 4. Build in structured interaction Don’t make your audience wait until the end of your presentation to interact. According to our research, presentations that incorporate audience engagement through polls, chat responses, or breakout discussions maintain attention longer. For the highest engagement: - Use a variety of interaction types throughout your presentation - Incorporate breakout rooms for small-group discussions - Switch modalities regularly to keep it interesting Remember: In virtual environments, you need to recreate the natural engagement that happens in person. Your virtual presentation success isn’t measured by perfection…it’s measured by action. Master these techniques and your audience won’t just pay attention, they’ll respond. #VirtualPresentations #CorporateTraining #WorkplaceLearning

Video content is one of the most effective tools for engaging audiences and simplifying complex topics. For law firms, it’s an opportunity to showcase expertise, connect with potential clients, and build trust in a relatable way. Here’s how to create impactful video marketing: 1️⃣ Use Videos to Simplify Complex Topics Legal concepts can feel overwhelming, but short, clear videos can break them down for your audience. Examples: “What to Expect During a Divorce Consultation.” “Understanding Your Rights After a Workplace Accident.” “How to Navigate Probate in the UK.” Tip: Focus on one key topic per video to keep it concise and easy to follow. 2️⃣ Showcase Client Success Stories Sharing anonymised testimonials or case outcomes can demonstrate your firm’s impact and build credibility. Example: A personal injury lawyer could share how their efforts helped a client secure a settlement. Tip: Use storytelling techniques to make these videos relatable and emotionally engaging. 3️⃣ Introduce Your Team Building trust starts with showing the human side of your firm. Use videos to introduce your solicitors, highlight their expertise, and provide a glimpse into your office culture. Examples: “Meet [Name], Our Family Law Specialist.” “A Day in the Life at [Your Firm].” Tip: Keep these videos professional yet approachable, showcasing your team’s personality and professionalism. 4️⃣ Use Live and Recorded Webinars Webinars allow you to engage directly with your audience, offering insights on trending topics or answering questions. Examples: “Navigating GDPR Compliance for Small Businesses.” “Understanding the Implications of No-Fault Divorce.” Tip: Record webinars to repurpose key moments into shorter clips for social media. 5️⃣ Optimise for Accessibility Make your videos accessible to a wider audience by including captions and transcripts. Why It Matters: Many users watch videos without sound, and captions also support viewers with hearing impairments. Tip: Use tools like Rev or Otter.ai to generate captions easily. 6️⃣ Promote Strategically Great video content needs to reach the right audience. Share videos on LinkedIn, your website, and via email newsletters. Use short clips or teaser versions on social media to drive traffic to the full video. Example: Post a 15-second clip of a webinar on LinkedIn with a link to watch the full session. 7️⃣ Track Video Performance Measure how your videos are performing and refine your approach based on data. Metrics to Monitor: Views, engagement (likes/comments), watch time, and conversions. Example: If explainer videos outperform team introductions, focus your efforts on educational content. Videos are a powerful way to engage your audience, showcase your expertise, and build trust. By tailoring your content to client needs and presenting it in an accessible, relatable way, your firm can create meaningful connections that lead to results. 💬 What legal topics would you cover in a video?

🥊 41.4 million people watched Canelo vs. Crawford on Netflix. It’s an astonishing number. But numbers can be deceptive. Psychology teaches us that attention is not loyalty. Viewership is a system 1 response, fast, emotional, driven by the spectacle of a mega fight. Loyalty is a system 2 outcome, slow, deliberate, reinforced by repeated, rewarding experiences. The challenge for brands is not to celebrate the audience spike, but to understand the fragile bridge between watching and staying. Behavioral science offers some clues: • Immediate feedback matters. A simple mission or poll within 24 hours captures the emotional residue of the fight. • Near-miss reinforcement keeps fans engaged when they almost get it right, like predicting the winning round but missing by one. • Consistency effects mean that once someone takes a small action (voting, claiming a token), they are more likely to return. The lesson: cultural moments create openings, not outcomes. The key is to design experiences that convert fleeting attention into sustained engagement. The real question isn’t “how many watched?” It’s “how many stayed?” #engagement #retention #loyalty #gamification

I've been emphasising on long-form content, and the single most important metric for success is "watch time." While short-form content has its place, YouTube's watch-time-driven algorithm presents the best opportunity for meaningful product integration and sustained brand visibility. My analysis of successful campaigns has shown that viewers are most engaged during specific windows of video content, and strategic product placement within these windows significantly impacts both brand recall and conversion rates. The data consistently demonstrates that the traditional approach of relegating sponsorships to the beginning or end of videos limits exposure and effectiveness. From my experience testing various placement timings, I've found the best approach for maximising exposure and retention is typically integrating the product within the first 40 seconds, with a secondary reinforcement at the 5-7 minute mark to maintain engagement and recall. This timing strategy helps ensure your brand message reaches the widest audience before potential drop-offs occur. Core Strategy Platform-Specific Approach YouTube Long-Form Focus: Prioritize 8-15 minute videos, as watch time is the key driver of algorithm performance. Strategic Short-Form: Use YouTube Shorts to tease or reinforce long-form content, serving as awareness drivers that maximize cross-channel engagement. Integration Timeline Early Mention (0-40 seconds): Introduce or tease the product naturally to ensure high visibility. Primary Integration (1:30-2:30): Provide a full product introduction, aligning it with the main content. Reinforcement (5:00-7:00): Include a secondary demonstration or mention to strengthen recall. Call-to-Action (Final 30 seconds): Deliver a clear CTA with an exclusive offer or unique code. Audience Retention Optimization Seamless Integration: Ensure the product naturally fits the creator’s style and content format. Content-Product Alignment: Align product features with the video’s theme for smooth, organic transitions. Performance Tracking: Use unique affiliate codes and tracked links to measure each creator’s impact. Why This Model Works? * Algorithm Alignment: YouTube prioritizes videos with higher watch times, increasing their chances of being recommended. Placing product mentions at key engagement points maximizes visibility. * Better ROI Tracking: Tracked links and codes provide precise attribution, making it easier to measure creator impact, optimize spending, and identify the most effective content formats. * Scalability: Continuous analysis of watch time and conversions enables a data-driven approach—scaling high-performing influencers while phasing out lower-performing ones for maximum efficiency. This approach not only aligns with YouTube's algorithm but also builds a scalable, high-impact strategy that maximises brand awareness, sustains audience engagement, and delivers measurable business results. Would love to know what strategies have worked for you!

How I Went from 50 Views to Over 75,000: Lessons from the YouTube Trenches When I first started posting my Tools, Talents & Techniques podcast episodes on YouTube, the audio downloads and listener support were strong — but on YouTube? Crickets. 50 views here, 100 views there. I honestly didn’t think too much about it at first. I was having fun, meeting amazing people, and learning a ton from the conversations. But after a while, I started wondering: Could I be doing more to share these conversations with a bigger audience? So I went down the YouTube rabbit hole — and it turned into a full learning experience. Here’s what I found (and what actually helped me grow organically): ✨ 1. SEO is about intent now, not just keywords. People aren’t just searching for “entrepreneurship” — they’re searching for answers, inspiration, and solutions. Descriptions need to be natural, not stuffed. ✨ 2. Micro-moments matter. Timestamps are gold. They help viewers (and YouTube’s algorithm) find the exact part of your video that matches what they need. ✨ 3. Engagement is everything. Likes, comments, watch time — they all outweigh raw views. You have to invite people to interact, not just sit back and watch. ✨ 4. Formatting and flow make a difference. Emojis, bullet points, and clear sections in the description improve readability — especially for mobile viewers (which is most of them now). ✨ 5. Prioritize YouTube links before pushing people elsewhere. Link your playlists and related videos first before dropping external links. Keep people in your ecosystem longer. ✨ 6. AI Summaries are coming. YouTube is starting to auto-summarize videos. A strong, well-organized description helps your content get summarized correctly — and shown to more viewers. ⸻ Bottom line: If you’re a creator or marketer, the game has changed. It’s not about chasing viral moments — it’s about setting up your content so it can work for you, even while you sleep. I’m still learning every day, but seeing growth from 50 views to over 75,000 (and climbing) has been a huge validation that these small tweaks work. If you’re trying to grow your audience — whether on YouTube, LinkedIn, or anywhere else — I’d be happy to compare notes. The journey is way more fun when you’re building and learning alongside others. Do you want a simple and actionable playbook to become more empathetic towards your audience? I got you! No one wants to see their content fall flat; disengagement is the last thing on a creator's wish list. This is why you should make empathy your content creation superpower. Here's your playbook to adopt empathy in your GTM plan: 1. Survey Your Audience [Why]: Run targeted surveys to understand your audience's pain points and preferences. [Example]: Noticed a dip in engagement? Ask your audience what topics they'd love to see—craft content based on their responses for an instant engagement boost. 2. Create Audience Persona [Why]: Create detailed personas for different audience segments to tailor content more precisely. [Example]: Develop personas like "Busy Professionals" or "Tech Enthusiasts" based on demographics and interests. Craft content that directly speaks to each persona for a more personalized connection. 3. Engagement Analytics [Why]: Analyze engagement metrics to identify what resonates and what falls flat. [Example]: Use platform analytics to track the performance of different content types. If short tutorials get more views and comments, prioritize that content style for increased engagement. 4. Active Listening on Social Media [Why]: Monitor social media conversations related to your content niche. [Example]: Engage in conversations, respond to comments, and join relevant groups. This active listening provides insights into trending topics and audience sentiments. 5. Storytelling with a Purpose [Why]: Share personal stories that align with your audience's experiences. [Example]: Narrate a personal challenge you overcame related to your niche. This not only establishes a connection but also inspires your audience. 6. Interactive Content Elements [Why]: Incorporate your content's polls, quizzes, or interactive elements. [Example]: Create a poll asking for preferences or opinions. It not only gathers valuable data but also boosts engagement through direct participation. In a nutshell, Empathy isn't just a buzzword; it's a series of actionable steps that can transform your content game. Start implementing these tactics, and watch your audience connection and engagement levels soar!

Do you spend time watching live content on #socialmedia? Here's what I learned after hosting 133 live Q&As that accumulated 122.8 million views on the World Health Organization's Facebook, X and LinkedIn accounts: 🎙 It's important to find a way to make viewers your content co-creators by allowing them to ask questions or take part in the conversation directly. It's social media broadcasting, not TV broadcasting. 👩💻 Live features are a useful tool to help an organization bring the human face and personalities behind the brand closer to the followers. 👩⚕️ Live feature is also a great tool when you want to communicate a complex issue that can't fit into 280 characters, to avoid misunderstandings and mitigate misinformation spreading. It allows the subject matter experts to illustrate and humanise complex answers. It's also an opportunity to debunk mis- or disinformation circulating. 🔛 Consistency in the programme, format, speakers is very important to build trust and a regular viewer community. 📈 A success measure should be the quality of engagement, rather than the quantity. We, at WHO, have built a community of regular viewers, which has led to an increased quality of questions that we receive during the live programme. ❗ Don't get into the seat in front of a camera/mic without doing your homework - the prep is key to a successful session. The prep includes: - social media and news analysis on the subject to make your conversation relevant - writing a skeleton of possible conversation, so your guests can prepare - have a prep meeting/chat with your guests. If it's their first time, do a thorough prep session or ran through with question examples and let them practice their answers. - make sure to test the mics ahead of time - make sure to test the connection ahead of time, if your live is done remotely - make sure your guests feel comfortable with the space - explore possibilities to advertise the session in advance ⌚ Do your best to be punctional, so your viewers aren't waiting for too long, if you advertise the session in advance. 🎦 Technology is amazing when it works. But there's always a possibility that something may fail. Don't be afraid to acknowledge it, apologise if needed and improvise. Last Friday, I hosted a live Q&A on #COVID19 with Dr Maria Van Kerkhove - my mic didn't work well. So we shared Maria's mic back and forth, until our colleagues behind the scenes figured out the problem. It wasn't ideal, but the show must go on! (P.S. We tested everything in advance!) Below are a few examples of how we run WHO live sessions, thanks to Chris Black, Mark N. and the team. They have significantly advanced our set up and technology - but their work merits a post on its own! To stream on multiple platforms, we're using Restream - I will also write about that development some time soon. Until then, let me know how you're running social media lives, or give us a feedback on what we can do better.

Are your presentations falling flat? Here’s how to master presenting in every setting. We now have to master 3 Worlds of Presentations: Virtual - hybrid - in person. Here’s all you need to know: Virtual Presentations 1. Boost your gravitas: In virtual settings, the presenter looks like everyone else. Inject energy with your voice and passion. 2. Raise your hands. They need to be chest-height to be visible. 3. Leverage chat & polls: Use chat features to encourage questions and feedback. Incorporate polls to engage your audience and gather real-time insights. 4. Ace the tech set-up: Lighting & sound matter. Familiarize yourself with the platform's tools (screen sharing, breakout rooms) before. Hybrid Presentations 1. Avoid two-class audience: Address both groups regularly to create inclusivity. 2. No hiding: Ask the remote group to have their cameras on. 3. Use Dual Screens: Set up a dual-screen layout where you can see both your slides and the audience. This helps you maintain eye contact and engage with both groups effectively. 4. Test Audio/Visual Equipment: Ensure all equipment works well in both environments. In-Person Presentations 1. Read the Room: Pay attention to body language and facial expressions to gauge audience engagement. Adjust your tone or pacing accordingly. 2. Utilize Movement: Move around the stage or room to create a dynamic presence. This helps to draw attention and energize the audience. 3. Encourage Interaction: Foster an interactive atmosphere by inviting questions and facilitating discussions throughout your presentation. 4. Avoid Death by Powerpoint: Resist the temptation to read from your slides. Slides are for the audience. No matter the setting, the key to a successful presentation is connecting with your audience. By tailoring your approach to each format, you can enhance engagement and leave a lasting impression. ♻ Please share to help your network and follow me Oliver Aust for daily tips on leadership communication.

➡ What are you focused on? Because if you’re focusing on this, you’re losing out. Vanity metrics Most people get caught up in follower counts and likes, missing out on the real value that quality interactions bring. Focusing on vanity metrics will make your LinkedIn presence superficial, leading to missed opportunities to build genuine relationships and achieve your professional goals. 💡The result is a large but unengaged network. Your posts will receive minimal genuine interaction, and your influence will diminish over time. This lack of meaningful connections will hinder your ability to drive business growth, establish thought leadership, and make a lasting impact in your industry. ➡ Here’s how you will shift your focus to meaningful engagement and achieve success: 1. Engage Thoughtfully: Take the time to leave insightful comments on posts from your connections. Thoughtful engagement will build stronger relationships and increase your visibility. 2. Personalize Interactions: When reaching out to new connections or responding to messages, personalize your communication. Show genuine interest in their work and offer value. 3. Share Valuable Content: Post content that addresses the pain points and interests of your audience. Focus on providing solutions, insights, and actionable tips that will benefit them. 4. Join Relevant Discussions: Participate in LinkedIn groups and industry discussions. Share your expertise and learn from others to build a reputation as a thought leader. 5. Foster Conversations: Ask questions in your posts to encourage dialogue. Respond to comments and engage with your audience to keep the conversation going. 6. Track Engagement Metrics: Monitor metrics like comments, shares, and meaningful interactions rather than just likes and follower counts. These metrics will provide better insights into the effectiveness of your engagement strategy. ➡ Ready to transform your LinkedIn engagement strategy and achieve meaningful interactions? Struggling to get results from your content? Many marketers waste resources on multiple channels. Remember: Marketing is not about the channels. It's about understanding your audience! Here's how to make the shift: 1. Prioritize Your Audience: The audience is the key to success, not the channel. Example: Instead of just posting on every social media platform, identify where your audience spends their time. 2. Create Relevant Content: Develop content that caters to their needs and interests. Example: If your audience is interested in DIY projects, create how-to videos or guides that resonate with them. 3. Analyze Behavior: Use data to understand their preferences. Example: Check which blog posts get the most views and engagement, and create more content around those topics. 4. Nurture Relationships: Focus on delivering value and building connections. Example: Engage with your audience by responding to comments and asking for feedback on your content. 5. Use Channels as Tools: Remember, channels are just tools for reaching your audience. Example: Use email marketing to share exclusive content with your most engaged followers. Stop wasting resources on channels that aren't working. Shift your focus to your audience, and watch your marketing efforts flourish! By putting your audience first, you’ll improve engagement and drive conversions.
