🔐 Designing For Privacy UX. Privacy isn’t about hiding something, but protecting user’s personal space. UX guidelines on how to design more respectful, private experiences that drive long-term loyalty ↓ 🤔 When data requests feel intrusive, users enter fake data or give in. ✅ Privacy is about user’s control of what happens to their data. ✅ Privacy by default: features should work with min data required. 🚫 Don’t ask for permissions that you don’t need at the moment. ✅ Right to be forgotten → allow users to delete data in settings. ✅ Data portability → allow users to take their data with them. ✅ Hidden Unsub links downgrade email reach (marked as spam). ✅ Neutral choices → give people real choices with neutral defaults. ✅ Data you don't ask for is the data you can't lose in a breach. ✅ Explain then ask → if you need user’s data, first explain why. ✅ Try before commit → show and explain value before asking for data. ✅ Remind me later → give people time to make a decision on their terms. ✅ Contextual consent → ask for data only when user’s action needs it. ✅ Automated data decay → delete user's data not used after X months. --- In many companies, privacy is treated as a technical hurdle to be cleared off. Companies thrive on user’s data for personalization, customized offers, better AI models — but also invasive targeting, ultra-precise tracking, behavioral predictions and eventually reselling data to the highest bidder. All of it isn’t only invasive and undermines trust — it also makes for slow experiences and advertising following you everywhere you go. Predictive models know a person is pregnant based on their browsing habits before they do. And once they do, ads, offers and messages will follow you everywhere you go — before your closest relatives hear it from you. When we speak about privacy, we often assume that that’s an exaggerated problem that doesn’t really affect us much. After all, we have nothing to hide, and so there is no harm in companies knowing a few things about us. But privacy isn’t about hiding something. It’s about protecting your personal space from external influence and manipulation. It’s about protecting your personal decisions and your intimate experiences, and having a choice to share them with people you trust and care of. Most people wouldn’t feel comfortable being observed by a camera during their work or during their spare time. Yet as we move from one page to the next, that’s exactly what happens, often without our consent. And just like web performance and accessibility, privacy is a part of user's experience. The good news is that European Commission is looking into modifying the way GDPR works. So users could tick a box in browser preferences, with privacy settings turned on by default. And then websites shouldn't be allowed to ask for consent because it's already not granted. I'm looking forward to that future. 🚨 OpenAI had to withdraw its chat sharing feature. Here’s the privacy lesson everyone’s ignoring: Most people will shrug this off as “tech moves fast.” But if you're in privacy, this is a wake-up call. Even anonymised data becomes dangerous when shared without context, safeguards, or real-world risk modelling. So what should you do? → Never trust UX to do the job of governance. → Audit for real-world behaviour, not internal assumptions. Privacy isn’t about permission. It’s about protection. And this? This was a failure to protect. Let’s stop building for what users should do and start building for what they will do.

I just watched a UX designer accidentally leak $12M worth of product strategy to ChatGPT in real-time. It happened during a design critique I was observing. He copy-pasted the entire product brief - codenames, launch dates, competitive analysis, user research with real participant quotes. All of it. Into a public AI system. No one in the room blinked an eye. I raised my hand an asked "That is in interesting approach - who else here does something similar?" More than half their hands raised. I cringe with what I knew I was about to reveal. "I really hate to tell you this - but that is sharing commercially sensitive information with public AI systems. De-identifying information isn't enough - because AI's super power is connecting seemingly disconnected information." The room went silent. Because we all realised: we've done this too. Here's the uncomfortable truth most of us don't discuss: As designers, we work a few months ahead of public releases. Our insights reveal strategic business direction. User research contains deeply personal information. Competitive intelligence is embedded in every design decision we make. We're trained to protect user privacy in our designs, yet we're surprisingly cavalier about privacy in our design process. 🚨 Dark Patterns in UX: Why They Hurt More Than They Help Dark patterns are tricks in design that make users do things they didn’t intend—like signing up for paid plans without warning or accidentally sharing more data than they wanted. While they may deliver short-term gains, the long-term impact is clear: 🚫 users lose trust and switch to more ethical products. Some common dark patterns to watch out for: 🚫 Forced continuity → free trial quietly turns into a paid subscription 🚫 Roach motel → easy to sign up, painful to cancel 🚫 Sneak into basket → hidden items added at checkout 🚫 Deliberate misdirection → focusing attention on costly options, hiding cheaper ones 🚫 Privacy zuckering → tricking users into oversharing personal data Instead of relying on tricks, build trust. Be transparent about pricing, make cancellation as easy as sign-up, and respect user privacy. I was booking a repair service on LG's chatbot. Step 4 of 5. Almost done. Then I saw this checkbox. "I agree with the data protection policy." I had to check it to proceed. No check. No service. This is not compliant. Here's why. Problem 1: Two purposes. One checkbox. SMS repair notifications and agreement to a data protection policy are two completely different things. DPDPA requires consent to be specific and separate for each purpose. Bundling them into a single screen with no granular options isn't just lazy design. It's non-compliant design. Problem 2: What exactly am I agreeing to? The checkbox says "data protection policy" with a link to the Privacy Policy. But there is no plain language summary of what data is being collected, why, and for how long. Just a link most users will never click. DPDPA requires the notice accompanying consent to be clear, standalone, and understandable on its own. A hyperlink is not a notice. LG is a global brand operating at significant scale in India. And yet this is the consent experience they've built. One forced checkbox. Two bundled purposes. Zero plain language. This is exactly the kind of design that DPDPA was written to fix. Compliance isn't just a legal team's job. It lives here. On this screen. At Step 4 of 5. Every product manager, UX designer, and compliance officer should look at their own forms and ask one honest question: If a regulator saw this screen today, would you be comfortable explaining it?

6 websites, 1 audit: Every pixel exposed sensitive data 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝: This week, a Nordic privacy regulator inspected six mainstream B2C websites - health, pharmacy, faith, and public services. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭: Every single one shared user data with third parties, unlawfully. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞? 1) Personal data - sometimes sensitive - was leaked via tracking pixels. 2) Children’s data and health/religious info were shared without consent or legal basis. 3) Most site owners had no idea pixels were transmitting this data. 4) One site, supporting vulnerable kids, was fined NOK 250,000. 5) Five others got formal reprimands—this time. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐡: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 - Browsing history + metadata = easy inference of health, religion, or children’s issues. - Pixels triggered data flows to big tech (often cross-border). - Sites claimed “anonymity” but logged full digital footprints. - Consent flows were misleading or nudging, not valid. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? a) Many enterprises lack pixel visibility - can’t track what data leaves, or where. b) Dev and marketing teams install pixels to optimize UX or ads - privacy impact rarely assessed. c) Legal & compliance teams discover violations only after audits or enforcement. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐁2𝐂 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐨 𝐍𝐎𝐖: - Audit all pixels and third-party scripts - quarterly at minimum. - Map real data flows - not just what’s “documented.” - Validate consent flows: Are users truly informed and free to say no? - Flag any special category data exposure (health, religion, minors). 𝐌𝐲 𝐏𝐎𝐕: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. A single pixel, if left unchecked, can trigger regulatory risk at enterprise scale. 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲? Creepy? Definitely. Costly for businesses? Absolutely. As a UX designer and privacy advocate, this bothers me. Where do we draw the line? → My messages aren't yours to analyze → My privacy isn't your growth strategy → My conversations aren't market research Let me share what most companies don't realize: Privacy violations can kill your business. Meta paid $𝟭.𝟯 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 for privacy violations Amazon faced a $𝟳𝟴𝟭 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 fine Facebook paid $𝟮𝟳𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 Google? $𝟭𝟲𝟵 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 settlement All for crossing the privacy line. Your Startup can loose everything because: → Users found out their data was oversold → Trust was broken by hidden tracking → Personalization went too far As a product designer and business owner, here's where I draw the line: The Privacy-First Framework I use: → Give users control to opt out easily → Only collect what you'll actually use → Make data collection obvious, not hidden → Delete data when you don't need it anymore Ask yourself: "Would I be comfortable explaining our data practices to my users face-to-face?" If the answer is no, you've crossed the line. Quick ethical guidelines: → Show users what you know about them → Be transparent about data sharing → Let them delete their data easily → Make 'Off' the default setting Because here's the truth: Users will forgive a bad design But they never forget a privacy breach Whether you're a designer or business owner/decision maker, you should have this talk with other stakeholders. 𝟭𝟬 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴n You may not be practicing Privacy by Design if: 1️⃣ Privacy discussions only happen after a system is built or a vendor is selected. 2️⃣ Data is collected “just in case,” without a clear and documented purpose. 3️⃣ New uses of existing data are approved without reassessing privacy impact. 4️⃣ Data retention periods exist on paper but are rarely reviewed or enforced. 5️⃣ Third parties have broad or long-term access with little ongoing oversight. 6️⃣ Privacy risks are treated as one-time approvals rather than ongoing responsibilities. 7️⃣ Privacy decisions are driven by templates instead of thoughtful questioning. 8️⃣ Privacy responsibilities are unclear, and teams assume someone else is handling it. 9️⃣ Changes in technology, scale, or context don’t trigger privacy reassessment. 🔟Privacy concerns are seen as blockers instead of part of good decision-making. When privacy is built in early, decisions are simpler, risks are reduced, and trust is protected. When it’s considered late, fixes become complex, expensive, and often disruptive. That includes household names such as: 🛒 Amazon India, Flipkart, Snapdeal – where urgency tactics, sneaky subscriptions, and complex return processes are often flagged. 🎟️ MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Yatra Online Ltd. – travel platforms known to use pre-ticked insurance options, inflated discounts, and hard-to-find cancellation policies. 🍽️ Zomato, Swiggy – food delivery apps where opt-outs for donations or tips can be buried. 💊 PharmEasy, Tata 1mg, Netmeds.com – healthcare e-commerce where transparency around discounts, shipping, or auto-refills is crucial. 🎥 Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix India, Amazon Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios – where auto-renewals, free trials with hidden terms, and tricky cancellations are common. 💳 Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay – digital payment platforms that may use nudges to upsell insurance or services during routine transactions. 💬 Even social platforms and online marketplaces like Meta (Facebook), Google, YouTube and OLX could be impacted—especially where consent and data-sharing interfaces are concerned. ⸻ 🛠️ So, what are dark patterns? These are deceptive UX/UI design tactics that manipulate users into actions they might not fully intend: • “Confirmshaming” when unsubscribing • Hidden fees at the last checkout step • Bait-and-switch pricing • Obscured opt-out options • False urgency (“Only 1 left!”) • Disguised ads as organic content India is saying enough is enough.
