Also known simply as “Japanese RPGs”, these games are a subgenre of RPG games that have been originally developed by Japanese game developers. Despite the name of the genre and most games still being produced by Japanese developers, some games that fit this category have been released by developers in other countries, especially South Korea and China.
JRPGs are role-playing games characterized by most commonly using turn-based gameplay where players take the role of a pre-existing character in a detail-rich game world. There is great focus on narrative and storytelling elements, with players usually partaking on an extremely high stakes journey, such as dealing with an evil entity that threatens to destroy a kingdom, world, or even the entire universe.
Different from Western RPG games, which allow players more freedom to explore and influence the world by custom personal actions, JRPG games often provide players with less opportunity for self-insertion into the narrative. Instead, it follows a more streamlined and linear narrative composed by different acts or episodes, where players observe the development of the story. If you want to learn more about the differences between JRPG and Western RPG games, please visit our News and Updates article about RPG Genres, as we give more examples about how these two differ.
These games also often put players on the command of a group of characters during their journey, each with their own backgrounds and nuances, instead of controlling a single character as seen on western RPG games. This contributes for developers to more reliably develop emotional connections of the player with the characters and the context that they are inserted.
While most JRPG games provide players with limited opportunity to influence on characters’ looks and personalities, these games are still rich in customization through most gameplay elements. Players are free to specialize their characters with different equipment, skills, and roles, giving players substantial flexibility to explore these games in the way they would prefer.
