Real-Time Strategy Games, or RTS, is a subgenre of Strategy Games where most game actions happen in real time, being the opposite of the turns structure seen on turn-based games.

These games often place players at the top of a chain of command as a ruler or godlike entity that is responsible for managing a large group of characters and structures. Players are required to make multiple decisions at the same time, often under the pressure of the clock. Different from Action-Adventure or Action RPG, these games heavily favor careful strategic and tactical consideration when executing actions, despite their frenetic real-time gameplay nature.

Real time strategy focus and complexity depends from game to game. Some games incentivize Macro management, which is often seen by the importance of properly establishing an overall base of operations and overarching strategy. Other games instead incentivize Micro management, as players have opportunities to meaningfully achieve goals and improve their performance if they dedicate energy to directly manage each individual unit independently instead of simply managing a group/platoon.
