The definition and delimitations of what makes a game a pure adventure game is a commonly discussed subject among gamers, as a variety of genres incorporate many of the same core elements, which in turn makes it more difficult to properly label these games. As a rule of thumb, games that feature action elements such as fighting and platforming are considered to be Action-Adventure, while games that feature elements such as character customization, skill trees, and grinding are labeled as RPG or Action RPG. Adventure-first games tend to have a more barebones structure, with few gameplay components and/or low complexity, as its main focus is in the story and promoting the feeling of players going on a journey.
