![The shocking, rude, inappropriate apostrophe of the President of a foreign country on an official visit to the USA by an entitled, social-media-created, non-journalist, MAGA cap-wearing [speaking of style and dress!], nobody on last Friday reminded me of a negative comment made by someone on a social media about my teaching in Oxford wearing a tee-shirt after seeing this [official] picture [for the newly renovated building of the Department of Statistics], where you may spot several students who have now become brilliant junior researchers in statistics and machine learning. On a completely different scale, of course. While I have never worn a suit outside the French Navy, I have very rarely been confronted with critics of my dressing style, an additional good reason for choosing academia! [Extracts from DT’s unhinged declarations on 19 Feb about Ukraine:]
“But today I heard: ‘Oh, well, we weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years. You should have ended it three years. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal.”
“A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left. We have a situation where we haven’t had elections in Ukraine. Well, we have martial law, essentially martial law in Ukraine, where the leader in Ukraine, I mean, I hate to say it, but he’s down at 4% approval rating and where a country has been blown to smithereens. You got most of the cities are laying on their sides.”
“Russia does not intend to destroy Kyiv, if they had wanted to, they would have done it. Russia is capable of wiping out Ukrainian cities 100%, including Kyiv, but right now, they are only attacking at 20%.”
“Russia wants to do something. They want to stop the savage barbarianism [sic].”
[And more during the joint session with Emmanuel Macron, on 24 Feb.]
“I don’t use those words lightly [when asked whether or not Putin is a dictator], we’ll see how it all works out.”
“The European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. That’s the purpose of it, and they’ve done a good job of it.”
[With the newspeak winner about the January 6 rioters’ pardon]
“I pardoned J6 people who were assaulted by our government. They didn’t assault. They were assaulted, and what I did was a great thing for humanity.”
[All these quotes were recorded before the 28 Feb deliberate ambush of President Zelenskyy set by the boned spurred Agent Orange and his hillbilly Iago, reaching the all-times nadir of US international relations…]

[Quotes from J.D. Vance’s speech at the Munich Security Conference, on 14 Feb 2025, a perfect Orwellian achievement in newspeak!]
“It looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly Soviet era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don’t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion, or, God forbid, vote a different way, or, even worse, win an election”
“…when we see European courts cancelling elections and senior officials threatening to cancel others, we ought to ask whether we’re holding ourselves to an appropriately high standard. (…) If your democracy can be destroyed with a few hundred thousand dollars of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn’t very strong to begin with”
“There is no room for firewalls [against the far-right AfD] People dismissing voters’ concerns, shutting down their media, protects nothing. It is the most surefire way to destroy democracy.”
“I look to Brussels, where E.U. Commission commissars warn citizens that they intend to shut down social media during times of civil unrest the moment they spot what they judge to be ‘hateful content,’ or to [Germany], where police have carried out raids against citizens suspected of posting anti-feminist comments online as part of ‘combating misogyny.’”
“in Britain and across Europe, free speech, I fear, is in retreat (…) the United Kingdom backslide away from conscience rights has placed the basic liberties of religious Britons in particular in the crosshairs”
“The Scottish government has begun distributing letters to citizens whose houses lay within so-called safe access zones, warning them that even private prayer within their own homes may amount to breaking the law. The government urged readers to report any fellow citizens suspected guilty of thought crime in Britain and across Europe.”
Ukraine was invaded three years ago…

It has been three years since Russia invaded Ukraine with the purpose of recovering USSR territories and resources, and putting in place a puppet government, under the pretexts that the current Ukraine’s government was dominated by neo-Nazis (!) and perpetuating a genocide in Donbas. With further arguments that the “West” (or NATO) was preparing a war on Russia. Ukraine’s resistance was unexpected by the invaders and put a stop to the notion that a few day Blitzkrieg would topple the Ukrainian government. Forward three years and the difference in numbers and resources has made Ukraine’s resistance stretched and desperate. The return of the Orange Menace and his pretence at achieving deals on every matter is making the outcome of the war even bleaker as the Trump administration shows no empathy for Ukranians (among many others!). Especially if Trump pulls the USA out of NATO altogether. In this case, it is alas hard to imagine EU sending (enough) peacekeepers to Ukraine, and even harder to imagine they could oppose further Russian attacks and crimes, as shown by the failures of UNPROFOR in ex-Yougoslavia, in particular Bosnia…
